• LIGHTS organised Earth Day celebrations on 22 April 2013 in various schools in Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Delhi.
  • LIGHTS choose 10 schools of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Delhi to conduct the programme in both English and Hindi.
  • A total of 2666 students from both primary and secondary sections participated in the programme from over 30 schools.
  • LIGHTS was one of the organisations sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India to organise the Earth Day celebrations in 2013.
  • Schools were identified in the select states.
  • Communication was established with the schools to seek permission for their
  • Participation / Expression of Interest.
  • The toolkit to be used during the programme was created.
  • The tool kit was delivered by our representatives to each school.
  • The schools organized the competitions and the outdoor activities as per the programme given in the brochure. They took photographs of the events and invited the media to give wider coverage.
  • The schools sent back the entries/digital pictures/report.
  • An Evaluation panel was created to judge the final awardees from the best entries received from the schools.
  • The final report along with the photographs sent by the participating schools was submitted to the Ministry. A utilization certificate duly audited by a Chartered Accountant was also submitted.

  • Customised bilingual banners were created for each school with specifics of location and school name. 1 such banner (size 6ft x3 ft) was awarded to each school.
  • The topics of the competition and Earth Day in general were included in the brochure for wider dissemination of issues of the day
  • The competitions and rules and regulations were placed in the brochure
  • A Quiz Book was distributed.
  • Five bilingual vinyl posters were created with succinct messages for the Earth Day celebrations.
  • Painting competition was organised for Primary and Senior categories.
    Prizes for the Painting competition for Primary and Senior students are:
    1st Prize: 5000/-
    2nd Prize: 4000/-
    3rd Prize: 3000/-
    4 Consolation Prizes of Rs. 500/- each
    Besides this event any one of the 5 compulsory programmes such as Tree plantation, City Cleaning, Children Bicycle Rally to promote non-polluting forms of transportation, Fancy Dress Competition and Quiz Competition (Question Bank enclosed in “Book of Questions”) were conducted by the schools.

  • Though the competition was meant for 200 students in Primary and Senior levels in each school, in many schools it exceeded that number and in all 2666 students participated in this painting competition. In total 26250 students participated in this celebration.
  • In almost every school neighbouring schools also participated in the celebrations. Therefore in actuality 25 schools celebrated Earth Day as organised by LIGHTS under the agies of the MoES.
